Students Win Diana, Princess of Wales Award
A group of Grove students has received certificates from Gordon Brown on behalf of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award.
The awards are given to people deemed to be inspirational in recognition of those who have shown qualities that have made a real difference to their community and school or who have succeeded against the odds.
The particular event which won them this accolade was the anti-bullying trial which was set up in the Magistrates Court. The group acted as prosecutors and interviewed a large number of witnesses from Police, Social Services, professional organisations, the Press and the school about different aspects of bullying. There was a judge and fifty members of the school acted as the jury. It was one of a number of creative responses to the issue of bullying made by the school but the impetus and planning for this event came from the students themselves.
‘For me personally, there is a sense of a cycle here’ said headteacher Richard Arrowsmith who retires at the end of the term. ‘I started at the school nine years ago, just days after Diana’s death and a number of students contributed to the book of remembrance at that time. Now, nine years on, it is nice that this award should be given to students during my last term. We are all proud about these certificates which are awarded against national competition.’

The students are Kerry Parker, Charlotte Bennion, Michaela Howlett, Charlotte Hambleton, Jordan Crossley, Tom Felton, Lydia Jones, Christopher Edwards, Hannah Shalliker and Ellis Jones
