Arts Festival
February brought Central and South America month. During the month all subject areas have included an aspect of culture from these countries in their curriculum. Mrs Bedford launched the month with assemblies for all houses and for students in Grove College.
Maths studied Mayan and Aztec numbers and Population pyramids.
English studied the novel “the invisible city” and “ the great Kapok Tree”.
Mr D Munn, the librarian arranged for a story teller to come to give sessions to all year 7 students.
Science looked at drug running.

RE focused on the Mexican Day of the Dead and Art made masks
inspired by this festival.
Design Technology made plaques from recycled materials inspired by South American designs.

Drama did some work on story telling and prepared pieces on La Lloruna – the weeping woman and the disappeared.
Business studies had a focus on Brazil.
Spanish teachers did a taster session in Portuguese.
Geography studied the Amazon and Mexico.

History worked on the impact of slavery in the Caribbean.
Food Technology looked at the food of the area.
PE looked at the martial art Capoeiro and had workshops in South American dances. Music held a workshop on Samba drumming.

The Library featured examples of some excellent work done in all areas of the curriculum during the month, practical activities such as mask making and an opportunity to taste South American foods.
Year 7 students have raised £1036 for Lepra, which supports people with leprosy in Brazil through PSHEE lessons and Years 8s looked at the real game and a holiday to South America.

The Arts Festival saw the culmination of all these elements in an evening of music, dance, food tasting, drama, displays and activities giving students a chance to show off their talents!
