Fifth Giving Nation Award for Grove

certificate

Grove students have won the Citizenship Foundation’s Giving Nation South West and West Midlands Regional Award for the fifth year in succession.  Through the guidance, support and enthusiasm of Mrs Pat Jackson, who teaches maths, a group of dedicated students have worked to raise funds for Vukani School in South Africa.

The Giving Nation award recognises all the charitable fundraising volunteering, campaigning and activism work. at Grove, and in addition to the support for Vukani School money has also been raised for Macmillan nurses, Children in Need and Lepra.

The school were invited to HM Treasury to join young winners from 8 U.K. schools on 15 October to collect their prize, a £1,000 grant towards their chosen school in South Africa.

To enter the awards, the Grove School team wrote a diary on the   G-nation     website describing their charitable activity, volunteering and campaigning activities throughout the school and the community.

Felicity Tyson, Communications Officer Giving Nation and Web Editor, Participation and Social Action Team and member of this year’s judging panel, together with Richard John, commented;

“The Grove School is an excellent example of a giving school – they are veterans at this award ceremony.  Year in year out, they have shown a keen determination and commitment to making every one in the school and their local community aware of their efforts to  create two computer suites, to provide vital equipment, educational resources and support to the lives of other children in the township of Vukani in South Africa.  They work hard, get everyone involved and they just never give up!”

Students from the charity team at the Grove School commented:

“Grove School supports charities on a regular basis.  Each year we hold fundraising events for Red Nose Day, Children in Need, Macmillan Cancer Support, The Poppy Appeal, Leprosy, but mainly we fundraise for Vukani Primary School.  Students, staff and members of the community all got involved this year with our fundraising and made a huge difference to the lives of people we were helping in Vukani.  The Giving Nation award is great recognition.  It’s really exciting to be winners and we’re looking forward to receiving our Award in London.”

The Giving Nation schools programme promotes and supports young people’s  learning and engagement in charitable activity, volunteering and campaigning through free school resources, an online awards programme and a web community at www.g-nation.co.uk.
