Grove Students celebrate record results
Grove School was delighted to welcome a large audience of students and parents to the annual Presentation Evening for those who completed their Year 11 courses earlier this year.
Students collected certificates for GCSE, GNVQ and a wide range of vocational qualifications gained through Grove’s flexible curriculum, which OFSTED described as “outstanding” earlier this year.
Overall, the results were the best ever achieved at Grove, with a 6% rise from 2005 in the headline figure of students gaining five or more higher grade GCSE passes or equivalent.
Awards were made to students who had excelled in individual subject areas, either by getting top grades or demonstrating exceptional commitment and progress throughout the course. Sporting achievements were also recognised.

Special awards were made to Gareth Bowen for his services to the school and to Tom Chevins and Hazel Martindale for the best overall GCSE results. Tom passed 13 subjects, with three A*s, eight As and two Bs. Hazel’s achievement was seven A*s, three As and two Bs – 12 in all. The results maintained Grove’s excellent record in recent years of outstanding achievement by the most able students. Headteacher Jane Radbourne commented:
“Government statistics focus on the percentage of students achieving five or more higher grades, but that does not tell the full story. Through the opportunities and flexible curriculum we offer at Grove, over 20% of students had eleven or more higher grades and no fewer than eight students managed 13 or more – something possible in very few schools across the whole country.”
Certificates and awards were presented by recently-retired Headteacher of Grove School, Richard Arrowsmith, who congratulated the students and the school on a very successful year:
“It gives me enormous pleasure to see so many students doing so well, not only in GCSE subjects but also in the wider vocational areas which have developed so strongly at Grove. On a personal note, I am obviously pleased that these record results have been achieved in my last year and I am delighted to have been invited to celebrate with students, parents and staff. I have moved on to retirement confident that Grove is a school of great opportunity, a school where students can achieve at the highest level and a school that is moving forward positively.”
Jane Radbourne added:
“We have a commitment at Grove, not only to providing an outstanding curriculum but also to working hard to see that all Grove students reach their true potential. Standards have risen significantly this year and we are determined to see the trend continuing”

Finally, Vice-Chair of Governors Margaret Fletcher thanked everyone who had been involved in the students’ success, and wished the youngsters well in their continuing studies.
