UKMT Maths Challenge - National Competition
A team of four students were selected after classroom activities to represent the school at a Regional Final Day at Wolverhampton at the end of March. It is a national competition and the nominated team spent the day competing against other schools in the area. The competition was in four stages and very demanding.
1. Group Competition
The contestants were given a set of 10 questions, which they should divide up among themselves so that they can answer, individually or in pairs, as many as possible in the allotted time.
2. Cross-number
Teams were divided into pairs, with one pair given the across clues and one pair given the down clues.
3. Head-to-head Competition
Students can work on any of their given questions at any time with the questions being designed so that pairs can carry out preparatory work before receiving the answer to the previous question.
4. Relay Race(up to 45 minutes, 2 points per correct question)
The aim is to have a speed competition with teams working in pairs to answer alternate questions.
Our team did tremendously well being placed 9th out of 28 teams.
