Romeo & Juliet

In English Year 9 students are doing a coursework based assessment in replace of their SATs exam which will take place this half term. To help in preparation for this students were treated to an hour and a half school workshop and performance by the Young Shakespeare Company on Monday.
The company aim to provide students with a thought-provoking, entertaining and insightful introduction to Shakespeare. They combined clear, accessible and well-paced acting with challenging, yet inclusive workshop activities. The emphasis throughout was on the importance of choice and interpretation in the process of putting on a play. They allowed the students the opportunity to see their ideas put into practice. Opening up the text in this way offered students a whole range of new insights into the plays’ complexity and possibilities.

It was performed in the round and, as you can see from the photographs, students really enjoyed both the workshop and performance.
The Young Shakespeare Company is one of the most well-established and respected educational theatre companies in the UK. It was formed in 1988 and currently performs Shakespeare to over 100,000 young people every year. Their projects have been cited by the Arts Council as an example of excellence in arts education practice.
