The House system
Grove School is divided into four Houses whose names – North,
East, South and West – reflect the international
outlook of the school and its status as a specialist
Language College.
All students join one of the Houses on arrival at the
school, with brothers and sisters normally all in the
same House.
There are eight mixed-age Guidance Groups in each House.
Each group’s Guidance Leader is responsible not only for
the immediate pastoral care of their groups, but also
for the oversight of their academic progress. Guidance Leaders
also provide advice and guidance throughout the five
years spent in the main school.
Students normally remain with the same Guidance Leader as they
move up through the school: this provides continuity
and ensures that each student has someone who knows them
well and can follow their progress throughout the school.
Guidance Leaders meet their groups for twenty minutes
at the start of each day. This is an important time for
the students to interact with each other, build up the
sense of community within the guidance group and the school
as a whole.
We place considerable importance on attendance and punctuality,
both of which are monitored by the Guidance Leader, supported where
necessary by the Educational Welfare Officer. Guidance Leaders
provide a very important link between home and school
and should, under normal circumstances, be the first
point of contact if problems or anxieties arise.
Regular House competitions of all kinds are held. Although
many are sports orientated, creative and artistic events
happen from time to time. House Points and good news slips are awarded throughout
the school to recognise all kinds of positive achievement – excellent
effort, sustained high quality of work, good progress,
regular attendance and service to the school.
