Key Stage 3

At Grove our aim is to provide as broad and relevant a curriculum as possible whilst meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum. This means that all students study the Core and Foundation subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Technology (CDT, Graphics, Food and Textiles)
  • A modern foreign language
  • Geography
  • History
  • Religious Studies
  • Art
  • Music
  • Personal, Social and Health Education
  • Physical Education
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Citizenship, which is taught through other subjects

Grove School - Road to KnowledgeIn addition, all students also study Drama and, in keeping with our specialist Language College status, a second foreign language.

In Year 7, students are placed in sets for English, Maths and Modern Language on the basis of their work in Key Stage 2 and SATs results. For other subjects, they are taught in banded ability groups with learning support where needed.

In Years 8 and 9, Science is also taught in sets.

However, we also believe that there are overarching skills, which we call competences, that students need to develop if they are to become effective learners and responsible, good members of society. We therefore subscribe to the RSA Opening Minds Curriculum which, through the traditional subjects sets out to develop students' skills in

  • Citizenship
  • Managing Learning
  • Managing Information
  • Relating to People
  • Managing Situations.

A feature of the Opening Minds Curriculum is the application of these competencies across all subject areas, with occasional cross-curricular projects or challenges bringing together the work of many departments in a single theme.

The Opening Minds Curriculum Project at Grove is featured in the RSA publication Opening Minds Update
