The Physical Education Department
The school and college have excellent facilities for both
indoor and outdoor activities, with large playing fields,
a sports hall, fitness suite and a gymnasium. We offer a wide range
of activities during lessons and after school.
The Physical Education curriculum is designed to offer
experience in as many activities as possible, sometimes
in single-sex groups and sometimes in mixed groups. These
include football, rugby, cricket, hockey, volleyball, basketball,
cross-country running, tennis, netball, badminton, table
tennis, gymnastics, trampolining, athletics, softball, dodgeball, extreme sports, orienteering, dance and health-related
fitness activities.
Clearly not every activity can be available to every year
group. In Key Stage 3 students will follow a programme
in line with the National Curriculum gaining experience
of a range of team sports as well as individual activities. In
Key Stage 4 students are offered more choice and can select
from a range of activities and games each half term during their core PE lessons. They can additionally chose either OCR National Award in Sport Studies or GCSE as an examination option.
In Grove College students also have the option of A level PE or the OCR course in Sports Studies.
There are clubs in all the major sports and school teams
are selected from those who attend practices regularly
to compete with other schools and enter county competitions.
The large department is led by Mr A Barber and Miss L Bright is Second in Department. Also teaching PE are Mrs R Whittaker, Mr J Granger and Mr D Littleford. Miss L Wilson is currently covering for Mrs V Lightfoot who is on maternity leave.
